Most of the notes taken in a professional meeting are lost twice. The first loss happens live: you write down what you can, and the rest of the room's discussion evaporates. The second happens afterwards, when the page you wrote on never makes it into anything searchable.
The EXXY® Smart Pen — development code name Pointy — is Unime Labs' answer to both losses. It is a Grade-5 titanium ballpoint pen that writes in real ink on ordinary paper, and simultaneously transcribes the room, attributes each spoken segment to a speaker, and streams your handwriting to the cloud as editable text.
It does all of that from a single press of the plunger. No app to open, no Bluetooth pairing flow, no proprietary dotted paper.
Why another smart pen
The smart-pen category has existed for two decades and has largely converged on three compromises. Some pens require proprietary dotted paper to know where the tip is. Some require a companion smartphone app to be open and connected before they capture anything. Some only record audio, leaving you to reconcile the recording against your notes by hand later.
Each compromise is defensible in isolation. Together they explain why smart pens remain a niche: the moment a tool asks you to prepare before you can capture, it loses to a plain notebook.
EXXY®'s design premise is that the pen must behave exactly like a fine writing instrument, and the intelligence must be invisible. That constraint drove three specific engineering decisions.
Any surface, via inertial measurement
Instead of reading position from a printed dot pattern, the pen traces its own movement. A 6-axis IMU — three axes of accelerometer, three of gyroscope — samples the tip's motion and reconstructs each stroke. Because the reference frame is the pen itself rather than the page, it works on a legal pad, a napkin, or the back of a drawing.
Stroke data is converted to editable text in under one second, so notes are searchable in the cloud before you cap the pen. The ink is a refillable ballpoint good for roughly 2 km of writing.
Speaker attribution, via room mapping
A transcript that says "someone agreed to own the deliverable" is not useful. Attribution is the difference between a recording and a record.
Audio alone makes attribution hard, especially around a boardroom table where voices bounce. EXXY® adds a spatial signal: a 940nm infrared camera with a 120° field of view maps the room and tracks which person is talking. That geometry is fused with audio from dual MEMS microphones with active noise cancellation, so each segment of the transcript carries a speaker label. Transcription and translation cover 40+ languages.
The 940nm wavelength is outside the visible range — the camera does not light up or flash, which matters in a room where a visible recording indicator would change the conversation.
On-device inference, not a cloud round trip
AI runs on the pen's Cortex-M33 processor with an NPU. That has three consequences that matter more than the raw benchmark:
- It works without connectivity. No Wi-Fi in the basement meeting room is not a failure condition.
- Cloud sync is optional. Up to 10+ hours of audio and its transcripts fit in the pen's 1 GB of internal storage. Nothing leaves the device unless you choose to sync it.
- The privacy story is structural, not a policy. Combined with AES-256 end-to-end encryption, "the audio never left the pen" is a statement about where the computation happened, not a promise about how a server behaves.
What one click actually starts
Pressing the plunger — the same action you would use on any retractable pen — begins five things at once:
- Real-time meeting transcription with speaker identification
- Handwritten note digitization, paper to cloud
- Room mapping and speaker position tracking
- Wireless transfer to your devices over Bluetooth 5.3 or Wi-Fi 6
- AI meeting minutes and action-item extraction
There is no interface to learn because there is no interface. The pen is either capped or it is working.

At 28 grams it is roughly the weight of a good metal pen — heavy enough to feel deliberate, light enough that an hour of writing does not become work.
Where it earns its place
Board and client meetings. The output is an attributed transcript plus your own handwritten emphasis, which is a materially better record than either alone. What you chose to write down is a signal about what mattered.
Site visits and design reviews. Capture a whiteboard or a marked-up drawing as an image and push it to your devices without breaking the walkthrough to find your phone.
Lectures and multilingual teams. Speaker-labelled transcripts in 40+ languages remove the reconciliation step for anyone working across languages.
Confidential settings. Legal, clinical and boardroom work often rules out a phone on the table running a recording app. A pen that processes on-device and stores locally is a different proposition.
How it fits with EXXY® AI Studio
The pen captures; EXXY® AI Studio is where the capture becomes work product. Transcripts and digitized notes land in the same workspace as the AI meeting assistant, the document intelligence pipeline, and the presentation generator — so a Tuesday site meeting can become minutes, a specification note and a client deck without being retyped.
For architecture and engineering teams, that continuity is the point. A dimension you wrote on a site sketch is worth more when it is searchable next to the BIM model analysis it contradicts.
Pre-launch status and pricing
The EXXY® Smart Pen is in pre-launch. An Indiegogo campaign launches 25 August 2026, with expected shipping to Super Early Bird backers in March 2027.
- Retail price: $499 USD
- Super Early Bird price: $219 USD — 56% off
- To reserve: a **219 pledge. If the campaign does not launch, the deposit is returned in full.
- Limit: 5 pens per customer at the Super Early Bird price
- Included: a handmade full-grain Italian leather case with every reservation
Not ready to reserve? Registering an expression of interest is free — name, email, and optionally a contact number and social handle — and gets you the launch announcement plus product updates. It takes no payment and does not reserve a pen or hold a price.
FAQ
What is the EXXY® Smart Pen?
The EXXY® Smart Pen is a Grade-5 titanium ballpoint pen with embedded AI. It transcribes meetings with speaker identification in 40+ languages, digitizes handwriting to the cloud via a 6-axis IMU, maps rooms with a 940nm infrared camera, and activates with a single press of the plunger — no app, no Bluetooth pairing and no special paper.
Does the EXXY® Smart Pen need a smartphone or an app?
No. No smartphone is required for the core features. One press of the plunger activates transcription, handwriting capture and room mapping. Cloud sync is optional — up to 10+ hours of audio store locally on the pen's 1 GB internal memory.
How does the pen know who is speaking?
A 940nm infrared camera with a 120° field of view maps the room and tracks speaker positions, and that spatial information is fused with audio from dual MEMS microphones. The result is a transcript where each segment carries a speaker label rather than a single undifferentiated block of text.
Does handwriting digitization need special paper?
No. A 6-axis IMU traces the pen's own motion rather than reading a printed dot pattern, so it works on any surface. Strokes are converted to editable text in under one second.
How long does the battery last?
Eight hours of continuous active use from a 400mAh Li-Po cell. A full recharge takes 45 minutes on the Qi wireless stand or over USB-C.
Is the data private?
All data uses AES-256 end-to-end encryption, and AI processing runs on the pen's own Cortex-M33 with NPU. No audio or handwriting is transmitted unless you enable cloud sync; otherwise it stays in the pen's 1 GB of local storage.
How much does it cost and when does it ship?
Retail price is 219 USD, 56% off, secured with a $25 fully refundable deposit. The Indiegogo campaign launches 25 August 2026 and expected shipping to Super Early Bird backers is March 2027.
Is the $25 deposit refundable?
Yes, unconditionally. If the Indiegogo campaign does not launch, the full 25 is applied to the 219.
